The Oresund Bridge is a double-track railway and dual carriageway bridge-tunnel across the Oresund strait between southernmost Sweden and Denmark. It runs nearly 8 km from the Swedish coast to the artificial island (constructed as part of the bridge) of Peberholm, which lies in the middle of the strait. The remainder of the link is by a 4 km tunnel from Peberholm to the Danish island of Amager. The Oresund Bridge is the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe, and connects two major metropolitan areas: Copenhagen, the Danish capital city, and the major Swedish city of Malmo. It connects the road and rail networks of Scandinavia with those of Central and Western Europe. The cost for the Oresund Connection, including motorway and railway connections on land, was US$5.7billion with the cost re paid by 2035. Total construction time four years 1995-1999. Daily traffic 17,000 road vehicles plus trains.
Contrast that to the NBN! US$33.25 billion (nearly six Oresund’s at least). Estimated to be completed by 2025 but will probably be usurped by superior technology before then.
