Ms McManus, who intends to lead unions on a campaign to ease legal restrictions on the right to strike, said it should not be so hard for workers to take legal industrial action when necessary.

“I believe in the rule of law where the law is fair and the law is right,’’ she said. “But when it’s unjust I don’t think there’s a problem with breaking it.”

This can work both ways, of course. Any shopkeepers, service staff, police, ambulance workers or anybody else who disagrees with McManus’s view could disobey legal obligations to assist her.
