Red Symons is now accused of racism by an outrage industry that loves venting and doesn’t do context.
First, does anyone seriously think Red Symons is a racist?
Second, has everyone actually forgotten who Symons actually is? He is a professional clown, and I do not mean that in a rude way. He jokes. He plays with words. He holds up certainties to ridicule. He is a contrarian (within the ABC’s tight cultural parameters.) At times he plays the devil, if not his advocate. And he seems to often bridle at the stupid contraints put on debate by those who love the power that comes with policing the language of others.
He wants to say the unsayable, just to show he can and won’t be told he can’t – an admirable Australian trait now almost extinct.
Listen to the damn tape, or the scraps of it that still exist on other sites now that the ABC has deleted what in fact is Symon’s best defence.
If Red wasn’t trying to take the mickey out of someone, or something, the world would be in big trouble.
